Crystal on a rock found in Afghanistan!

Crystal on a rock found in Afghanistan!
I have no idea what this is but, it intrigued me! I was about 20 feet down in a very large hole in the ground being dug out by our engineers. I’ve always been fascinated by the earth and its soil, rocks and minerals! I followed the walls of this hole all around admiring the visible individual layers of fine sand on top of large rocks, on top of smaller rocks, on top of clay…

I dug into the wall a good foot in depth with my knife hoping to find some ancient Afghan artifact and or some kind of fossil. Sadly, I didn’t make the discovery of the century however; I did find the above along with some other interesting rocks. I was like a kid in a candy store! I could have stayed and played in that hole for a week! LOL!!!!

What you see above is very small; smaller than my thumbnail actually! I really didn’t have a container to place this small pebble in so I put it in my pocket hoping the crystal would not break off by the time I got back to my office. I was pleased to see the crystal still intact upon my arrival.

Anyone have any clue to what this is? How would crystal grow from this small of a rock? Did the crystal grow downward, or upward? How could the crystal grow at all being burried under tons of other dirt, rocks and clay?

Photograph taken in Southern Afghanistan by me using a Canon 7D with the Canon 100mm Macro f/2.8L IS USM.

I’m selling my f/2.8L 100mm Macro if anyone is interested – I’d be willing to trade for the Canon MP-E 65mm 1×5 Macro!
